If you've shopped for towels recently, you've probably seen zero twist towels on the label. It sounds technical, and it's rarely explained. Even members of our own team, after years around bedding and bath linen, have asked the experts in our product team what it actually means.

Here's the simple answer, and what it means for how your towels look, feel and last.

In short: Zero twist towels are made from cotton yarn that has had its twist taken out. Ordinary towel yarn is tightly twisted for strength. Zero twist yarn is left loose, so the loops on the towel feel softer and fluffier, weigh less and dry faster.

What Does "Zero Twist" Mean?

Cotton fibres are short. To turn them into yarn, they're spun, which means twisted together like a rope. The more twist, the stronger the yarn, but the firmer and tighter it becomes.

Look closely at an everyday towel and you'll see that each loop is a tight little spiral. On a zero twist towel, the loops are open and the cotton fibres fan out. That open structure is where the softness comes from.

How Are Zero Twist Towels Made?

This is the part most guides skip. Completely untwisted cotton is too weak to survive a weaving loom, so manufacturers use a clever workaround:

1. Pairing: The cotton yarn is twisted together with a thread made from a water-soluble fibre, twisted in the opposite direction.
2. Weaving: The two threads together are strong enough to be woven into a towel.
3. Dissolving: The finished towel is washed in very hot water, around 85–90°C. The soluble thread dissolves away completely.
4. Relaxing: With nothing holding it in place, the cotton untwists, leaving soft, open, fluffy loops.

Good zero twist towels usually use longer cotton fibres, such as Turkish or Egyptian cotton. Longer fibres hold together better with little or no twist, so they stay soft without falling apart.

Zero Twist vs Low Twist Towels

You may also see low twist towels. The idea is the same, with less twist than a standard towel, but some twist remains. In practice, brands use both terms loosely. The feel and weight of a towel will tell you more than the label alone.

• Softer feel: Open loops feel plush and gentle on the skin, even without fabric conditioner.
• Absorbent: Loose fibres give water more surface to soak into.
• Lighter to hold: A zero twist towel often feels fluffier and thicker than its weight suggests.
• Quicker drying: Air moves easily through the open loops. That's handy in bathrooms where towels don't always get the chance to dry fully.

Are There Any Downsides?

We'd rather you know before you buy:

• A little fluff at first. Loose fibres can shed some lint in the first few washes. This is normal and settles down.
• Loops can snag. Watch out for jewellery, Velcro, and pets' claws. If a loop pulls, snip it level with scissors rather than pulling it.
• Less rugged. For the gym, the beach or drying the dog, a tightly twisted towel will cope better with rough use.

How to Choose Zero Twist Towels

Check the GSM. GSM stands for grams per square metre and measures how dense a towel is.

Check the cotton. Look for 100% cotton. Turkish cotton, like our Bianca Soft Zero Twist towels, is known for being light and absorbent.

Look for certification. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 means the towel has been tested for harmful substances.

• Face cloth: 30 x 30cm
• Hand towel: 50 x 85cm
• Bath towel: 70 x 120cm
• Bath sheet: 90 x 140cm

How to Care for Zero Twist Towels

• Wash before first use to remove any loose fibres.
• Wash at 40°C, and always check the care label.
• Use less detergent and skip fabric conditioner. Conditioner coats the fibres and reduces absorbency.
• Don't use bleach.
• Tumble dry on low or line dry. Give towels a good shake first to lift the loops.
• Wash dark colours separately, especially the first few times.

Generally, yes. The process works best with longer, stronger cotton fibres, so zero twist towels are usually made from better-quality cotton.

Are zero twist towels the same as Egyptian cotton towels?
No. "Egyptian cotton" describes the type of cotton, while "zero twist" describes how the yarn is made. A towel can be both.

Do zero twist towels shed?
A little, in the first few washes. It eases off quickly.

Most can, on a low heat. Always check the care label.
