How to Measure for Made to Measure Curtains

Curtains are one of the simplest ways to transform a room. They soften a space, frame your windows, and bring your entire interior together.

While ready-made curtains offer convenience, made-to-measure curtains provide a tailored finish that elevates your home. Designed to your exact specifications, they ensure a precise fit, improved functionality, and a more refined look.

Measuring correctly is one of the most important steps when ordering made to measure curtains. Accurate measurements help ensure your curtains fit beautifully, hang properly, and create the polished finish you want for your space.

This step-by-step guide explains how to measure for made to measure curtains, including curtain poles, tracks, different heading styles, and common mistakes to avoid.

What You’ll Need:

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • A tape measure
  • Pen and paper or your phone to record measurements
  • A step ladder if needed

For the most accurate results, always measure in centimetres (cm).

1. Install & Measure Your Curtain Pole or Track First

Always install your curtain pole or track before taking measurements.

Measuring before installation can lead to inaccurate curtain sizes, especially if the pole height or width changes during fitting.

2. Measure the Width

Measure the full width of your pole or track in centimetres (cm), from end to end.

This determines how wide your curtains need to be for proper coverage.

Pro tip: Most curtains use 1.5x fullness for a more relaxed look
2x fullness for a fuller, more luxurious finish

Curtain Pole

Measure the full width of the pole excluding decorative ends. Curtain poles are typically visible and work well with Eyelet curtains & Pencil pleat curtains with rings

Curtain Track:

Measure the width of the pole excluding the finials (the decorative ends).

3. How to Measure Curtain Drop

Next, choose your required length, the most popular ones are to the windowsill or to the floor. Measure in three places to ensure your measurements are correct.

Common options include:

  • Just below the windowsill

  • To the bottom of the window

  • Floor-length for a more luxurious finish

Eyelet Header Curtains:

Measure from the top of the pole to your desired end point.

Pro tip: add that extra "header" allowance (usually 2-3cm) so the fabric doesn't look cropped at the top.

Pencil Pleat (on a Track): Measure from the top of the track, so the fabric hides the plastic rail.

Pencil Pleat (on a Pole): Measure from the eye (the small loop at the bottom of the ring). This ensures the curtain sits neatly below the pole.

Where to Measure

Sill Length

1.25cm (1/2") above the windowsill.

Below Sill

15cm (6") below the windowsill.

Floor Length

1.25cm (1/2") above the floor (to avoid dragging/dust).

5. How to Measure Bay Windows for Curtains

Bay windows can be more complex to measure, but accuracy is especially important for achieving a tailored finish.

For bay windows:

  • Measure each section of the bay individually
  • Follow the exact shape of the pole or track
  • Record all measurements carefully
  • If you are unsure, it’s always worth double-checking measurements before ordering.

6. Check for Obstructions

Ensure there are no radiators, furniture, or window handles that may affect how your curtains hang.

Pro tip: the pole/track should ideally extend 15–30 cm past the window frame on each side. This allows the curtains to be pulled back without blocking the light.

7. Double-Check Your Measurements

Accuracy is key. Always measure twice to avoid errors and ensure the perfect fit.

Pro Tip - Precise measurements are essential for achieving that clean, tailored look that makes made-to-measure curtains feel truly luxurious.

We will manufacture your curtains to the nearest half width of fabric based on the measurements you provide. (1 Width = 130 cm approx.).

For example: Track/Pole Width: 180cmEach curtain panel would have a fabric width of 195 cm (approx.) generating a total fabric amount of 390 cm (approx.) to cover the window with a generous gather. (approx.)

Curtains over 1 width will require a join

Common Curtain Measuring Mistakes to Avoid

To achieve the best fit possible, avoid these common mistakes:

  • Measuring the window instead of the pole or track
  • Forgetting to install the pole before measuring
  • Using inches instead of centimetres
  • Not accounting for curtain fullness
  • Measuring only once

Always double-check your measurements before placing your order.
